Welcome to Dr. Sharfstein's Lab

Our laboratory is located at the University at Albany, College of Nanotechnology, Science and Engineering, where we focus on advancing bioprocessing and monoclonal antibody (mAb) production in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Our research addresses key bioengineering challenges, including cellular productivity, DNA methylation, and protein glycosylation, to improve therapeutic outcomes. We innovate in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, developing novel treatments for conditions like salivary gland dysfunction and glaucoma. Our lab also investigates ways to interface living systems with electronic and photonic devices to create biohybrid systems and advance cell therapies. Collaborating with academic and industry partners, our lab is committed to driving impactful advancements in biotechnology and medicine.

What We Do

Research

The Sharfstein Laboratory specializes in bioprocessing and mAb production using CHO cells, examining productivity factors like proteomics, transcriptomics, DNA methylation, tRNA production, and glycosylation. The lab also focuses on bioengineered heparin, antibody sequence effects, and projects in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, including salivary gland engineering, glaucoma research models, and innovative bioreactors.

Outreach

With support from the National Science foundation, we recruit undergraduate fellows for hands-on research experience. The lab also involves middle school students in science education through innovative projects, such as using an electromyographically controlled robotic car to demonstrate brain-body communication, fostering early interest in bioelectronics and photonics.
