Education

Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, University of California, Berkeley, 1993

B.S. with honors in Chemical Engineering, California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA, 1987

Background

The Sharfstein Laboratory focuses on optimizing mammalian cell systems for producing therapeutic proteins and carbohydrates. We use modern cell biology and “omics” tools to enhance production through engineering and biological methods. Current projects include improving heparin production in CHO cells, identifying factors affecting monoclonal antibody yield, and studying osmolarity and growth rate impacts. We also explore nanotechnology for high-throughput RNA delivery and novel biosensors for bioreactors.
